Welcome to Lighthouse Dyslexia Services…

Both school and the workplace can be confusing and frustrating places for children and adults with literacy difficulties. Issues with reading, writing, spelling, memory or processing can lead to poor results and can have a huge impact on confidence and self-esteem.

Lighthouse Dyslexia Services offer remote/online and face-to-face dyslexia assessments by a specialist assessor who holds a Level 7 (masters) qualification.

I hold a current Assessment Practicing Certificate (APC – 0223/125), which confirms that I offer assessments which meet report writing and assessment standards required by the DfE for Disabled Student Allowance (DSA). It also means that my practice is externally verified every three years to ensure that my assessments and reports meet defined competency standards. I am a member of Patoss and The Dyslexia Guild, which means that I am obliged to undertake regular Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and to keep up to date. I also have a fully enhanced DBS.

A diagnostic assessment is the first step in understanding your or your child’s dyslexia. Early diagnosis and the right kind of intervention for each individual’s unique profile can make all the difference to outcomes at school and to an adult’s experience in the workplace. I offer assessments for children and adults from 7 years old.

I am based on the Yorkshire Coast and offer in-person assessments and advice to suit your needs. For those further afield I also offer remote assessments via Zoom or TEAMS.

I also offer bespoke packages of tuition which focus on the areas you or your child find difficult. Tutoring sessions are individualised to suit your child’s pace and learning style, building on their strengths and confidence.

What is dyslexia?

“Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. Characteristic features of dyslexia are difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speed” (Rose, 2009)

Full Diagnostic Assessments

An in-depth series of assessments can provide a diagnosis of dyslexia. If a diagnosis is made, the report can provide evidence which can be used to support a claim for Disabled Student Allowance.

Screening Assessments

A shorter assessment for ages 7-16. These are not diagnostic assessments but can provide strategies for use at home and in school. A need for further investigation may be identified.

School Support

Assessments of attainment, cognitive profile, memory, processing speed, visual-motor ability and phonological awareness are carried out according to the needs of the child. We can also carry out assessments for exam access arrangements
