Screening Assessment

Screening Assessment for Dyslexia

The screening assessment is a shorter and less in-depth assessment for 7-16 year olds. It provides us with an overview of the child/young person’s strengths and difficulties and gives an idea of whether further investigations into dyslexia are needed.

This can take place online via Zoom or in our Scarborough office.

Before starting the assessment, time would be spent getting to know the child/young person and ensuring they were comfortable and happy with what the assessment involves. The assessment would include carefully selected tests on phonological awareness (the ability to identify, discriminate between and manipulate units of sounds in words) and tests of core abilities in reading, writing and spelling.

The assessment would take around 1-2 hours depending on the child/young person’s needs/rest breaks etc.

A short report would be produced which would include test scores and individualised recommendations for support/interventions which would be of benefit to the child/young person at home and in school.

The screening assessment does not diagnose dyslexia and the report can not be used to support an application for Disabled Student Allowance. It may, however, indicate the need for further investigations.
